Salamander ESES Ceramic Infrared Heater for use with Pets and Animals

ESE with a Long Stem

The Salamander Edison screw-based emitter (ESES) ceramic infrared heater creates natural sun-like heat to provide animals with the warmth they require, whether it be for comfort, incubating or therapeutic needs.  The Edison screw-base design fits into an ordinary light bulb socket type reflector (of sufficient wattage rating.)  Ceramic heating elements were designed specifically for use with pets such as lizards, iguanas, geckos and other reptiles, birds, domestic pets, exotic and tropical animals and arboreal snakes.  The gentle uniform heat pattern of the ESES offers a vast improvement over ruby red heat lamps or regular light bulbs which emit light, have infrared hot spots created by the glowing element inside the bulb, break or shatter easily, and have a short life span.  Replacing fan-forced air heating avoids the wasteful problem of heated air rising to the ceiling.  They are typically used in environments such as:

Helpful Hints

  1. Make sure the wattage of heat emitter is correctly rated for your terrarium size!
  2. Make sure to place your lamp above the screen top of your terrarium. Not inside!
  3. Make sure lamp is securely clamped to terrarium rim or hung from Repti Lamp Stand to prevent accidents!
  4. Do not cover lamps with blankets, rugs or any other material.
  5. The Repti Lamp Stand must be counter balanced with the weight of your terrarium. Do not use free standing!

Optional Controls:

Columbus Electric KT-121AH Thermostat.  Thermostat for Portable Heaters with Extension Cord & Hanger. 6 foot extension cord with piggyback style plug.  -10 to 100F. 13 Amp, 1500 Watt Max. 120 Volt only.
Zoo Med Reptitemp Rheostat Deluxe 500 Watts. A manual control rheostat that will handle up to 500 watts of heating devices. Dual receptacles allow you to plug and control two items at once. 120 Volt only.

Because all species of animals have specific temperature requirements and there are a variety of cages available, the distance from the cage and wattage of the heater you should use will vary.  Research internet and other herpetology resources for information about the animal being heated and the geographical region it is native to, for temperature ranges that are optimal.  By checking temperatures at many different places in the cage you can learn how to best place the ceramic heater and reflector.

An average distance guideline:

60 Watt 10-14 inches (250-350 mm)
100 Watt 12-16 inches (300-400 mm)
150 Watt 14-24 inches (350-600 mm)

Infrared heat penetrates the skin tissue or fur and is slowly absorbed by the animal.  Infrared energy also promotes health and healing of animals because it dilates the blood vessels and increases blood circulation of oxygen and nutrients, penetrates deep into skin and muscle tissue, provides comfortable heat, reduces soreness and stiffness of joints and muscles, benefits the immune system and reduces stress by creating a more ideal environment, similar to the way an infrared sauna effects humans.  Some users of ceramic heaters have reported that their animals are larger, healthier, lay more eggs, eat better and are much more active.  Ceramic heaters do not emit light, which can be irritating and disturb the natural light/dark awake/asleep cycle.

Reptiles need to be kept warm and thoroughly enjoy basking under infrared heat in their aquarium, terrarium or vivarium.  Ceramic heaters are a better choice than a heat rock which can have an electrical safety issue, is an unnatural heater for animals such as a basking lizard, and burning can result due to overexposure to the surface of the rock.  Reptiles need to warm to at least 80°F for several hours each day because basking in infrared heat provides essential warmth for digestion and for the immune system to adequately fight off infections.  A difference in temperature in the tank (one cool end and one hot end) is a good way to provide heat because reptiles are cold-blooded and regulate their body temperature by moving between areas of different temperatures. In their natural habitat, lizards are adapted to this method of warming their bodies.  With inadequate warmth, food impaction can result due to their inability to digest food properly.
Snakes:  Each type of snake prefers a different temperature and they will regulate their temperature by seeking out, or avoiding the infrared rays and hotter part of the tank. Make sure that the snake has a place to hide from light and infrared rays, the water bowl is on the opposite side of the tank from the heaters, and don't use too much full spectrum light. Include a climbing branch.  For most snakes a temperature between 75-85°F should be fine.
Parrot Birds:  Each type of bird prefers a different temperature and they can regulate their temperature by seeking out, or avoiding the infrared rays and hotter part of the tank. With infrared heat you can create a comfort zone that your bird can move into and out of, but birds are known to move too close to the heat source and fall asleep or become drowsy.  They can become overheated and even fall off their perch, so make sure that your avian cannot get too close to the heater.  Baby birds, sick birds and egg-laying birds can use alot of their energy just to maintain body temperature, so extra heat can be beneficial.
Breeders:  Ceramic infrared heaters are widely used for comfort heating in animal husbandry of many types of animals and are also the preferred heater of other experts including zoos, veterinarians and herpetological suppliers.  Infrared heaters are used for brooding of mammals, livestock, cats, piglets in farrowing cages and in kennels.
